The Chief of Staff at UC San Diego plays a pivotal role in the overall management of the Operations Management and Capital Programs (OMCP) department. This position works closely with the Vice Chancellor to execute key priorities, triage major issues, and establish key metrics that contribute to continuous improvements within the department. The Chief of Staff is responsible for managing the VC OMCP strategic plan, tracking goals and outcomes, and staffing key committees and task forces, representing the Vice Chancellor in various capacities. This role requires high-level authority to make official commitments and to broadly represent the Executive's interests across the organization, responding to issues that may have little or no precedence. Under the general direction of the Vice Chancellor, the Chief of Staff serves as a Senior Advisor, providing high-level professional guidance and support in all areas relating to OMCP and campus-wide issues. This includes collaboration with campus leaders, the UC Office of the President, other UC campuses, and external constituents such as community organizations and elected officials. The Chief of Staff acts as the Vice Chancellor's liaison for outreach efforts at various levels, providing strategic direction and organization-wide planning. This position also leads strategic planning efforts to ensure that OMCP goals and programs align with campus and system priorities, as well as higher education best practices. The incumbent will have broad discretionary responsibility for applying appropriate management techniques and executive-level judgment to provide leadership in defining the direction, goals, and requirements of the organization. This includes directing projects, analyzing outcomes of high-level initiatives, and facilitating communication and implementation of decisions and strategies. The Chief of Staff will develop executive-level presentations to support OMCP objectives and will exercise a high level of judgment in selecting methods and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
