About the position

The Chief of Staff at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) plays a crucial role in supporting the Director by managing high-priority initiatives and ensuring effective communication across various stakeholders. This position is essential for fostering a collaborative environment and requires a strong leader with excellent organizational and communication skills. The Chief of Staff will oversee strategic planning, decision-making processes, and executive support, while also managing administrative personnel and promoting a positive workplace culture.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to prioritize and execute strategic Institute initiatives.
  • Oversee Directors' initiatives and work with stakeholders to ensure successful, timely outcomes.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to the Director in support of decision-making processes.
  • Monitor and report on institute-wide and multi-mission issues to the Director and senior management.
  • Act as a trusted advisor, offering objective perspectives on key issues.
  • Serve as a liaison to ensure effective communication between Missions, Divisions, and Senior Leadership.
  • Communicate objectives and strategic initiatives clearly to various audiences.
  • Anticipate needs and provide support to ensure the Director is knowledgeable of current topics.
  • Support the preparation of presentations and materials for board meetings and conferences.
  • Establish standards and procedures for hiring and managing administrative personnel supporting the Director's Office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or other technical fields; advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in a senior management role, preferably as a Chief of Staff or similar role.
  • Experience in an academic, science, or engineering organization preferred.
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify solutions to complex issues.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize and execute competing tasks and projects.
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on complex topics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a leadership position requiring initiative and independent judgment.
  • Ability to influence and drive decisions without direct line authority.
