About the position

The Chief of Staff Veterinarian plays a crucial role in managing the hospital and ensuring the highest quality of veterinary care, exceptional client service, and maximum productivity of the veterinary medical team. This position is dedicated to advocating for pets and their quality of life, fostering long-term relationships with clients, and educating both clients and hospital associates on all aspects of pet health. The Chief of Staff collaborates with the Practice Manager (if applicable) to operate an effective and productive veterinary medical team, ensuring a safe and engaging hospital environment while improving both medical quality and business performance. In this role, the Chief of Staff will balance leadership responsibilities with practicing veterinarian duties, with an expected ratio of approximately 20%-30% leadership duties and 70%-80% veterinarian duties. Leadership responsibilities include exemplifying the Five Principles of Mars, Inc., managing the hospital alongside the Practice Manager, training the team on Banfield guidelines, and ensuring compliance with protocols. The Chief of Staff will also oversee the professional development of Associate Veterinarians, create and maintain schedules, and act as a communications liaison within the hospital. On the veterinary side, the Chief of Staff will establish trust with clients, perform diagnostic workups, develop treatment plans, and practice evidence-based medicine. They will lead the veterinary team through daily schedules, provide exceptional service, and advocate for preventive care. The role requires a commitment to maintaining high standards of care and ensuring the safety of pets, clients, and associates. The Chief of Staff will also be responsible for adhering to all local, state, and federal laws, as well as Banfield's policies and protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the hospital to ensure high-quality veterinary care and exceptional client service.
  • Advocate for pets and their quality of life, building long-term relationships with clients.
  • Educate clients and hospital associates on all aspects of pet health.
  • Partner with the Practice Manager to operate an effective veterinary medical team.
  • Train and supervise associates to ensure compliance with Banfield guidelines and practices.
  • Oversee client service training and effectively resolve client issues.
  • Identify bottlenecks in medical operations and formulate solutions.
  • Partner with leadership to interview, select, train, and develop hospital associates.
  • Create and maintain veterinarians' schedules to meet client needs.
  • Act as a communications liaison, holding routine team meetings and sharing business information.
  • Develop annual planning, budgeting, and productivity levels for the hospital.
  • Ensure compliance with all practice policies and procedures and local, state, and federal laws.
  • Establish trust with clients through effective preventive care and treatment plans.
  • Lead the veterinary hospital team through daily schedules and caseloads.
  • Promote the safety of pets, clients, and associates by maintaining clean and organized areas.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree required.
  • Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with the applicable state veterinary board.
  • Two years clinical experience required.
  • 1-3 years coaching and developing associate doctors required.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple tasks under distracting conditions.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to create order from chaos.
  • Proven surgical skills and ability to perform basic surgeries.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to translate problems into practical solutions.
  • Commitment to continual learning and professional development.
