About the position

The Chief of Staff position at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is a senior management-level role that reports directly to the President & CEO. This role is situated in a dynamic, fast-paced, and high-stakes environment where collaboration, innovation, and goal-oriented project management are essential. The Chief of Staff will play a crucial role in supporting the President & CEO in managing the Senior Staff and overseeing the operations of the Office of the President & CEO. This includes ensuring that priorities and strategic agendas are tracked, met, and reported effectively. The Chief of Staff will also serve as a sounding board for the President & CEO and oversee the implementation of key work-streams on their behalf. In this role, the Chief of Staff will strategically manage the President & CEO's time, ensuring they are informed about important issues impacting the organization. This may involve representing the President & CEO at internal and external meetings. The Chief of Staff will also be responsible for preparing the President & CEO for meetings and speeches, managing the development of briefing materials, and maintaining effective communication with the Senior Leadership Team. The position requires a commitment to the mission of The Leadership Conference and a strong background in civil rights and social justice issues. The Chief of Staff will also support organizational strategic planning by collaborating with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure that the organization's strategic direction is consistent and effectively communicated. This includes managing large cross-functional projects, tracking the implementation of strategic initiatives, and assessing the efficacy of current processes to optimize efficiency and productivity. The role demands a detail-oriented, data-driven individual who can lead teams, solve problems under pressure, and work comfortably in a diverse environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure effective and efficient tracking and reporting of priorities and strategic agenda to the President & CEO.
  • Guide and support the effective collaboration of the Senior Leadership Team, including developing meeting agendas and supporting information flow.
  • Strategically manage the President & CEO's time by addressing external opportunities and assessing their fit against priorities.
  • Act as gatekeeper to the President & CEO's availability to ensure involvement in projects or decision-making processes occur at key times.
  • Prepare the President & CEO for meetings and speeches by managing the development of briefing materials and talking points.
  • Follow up on contacts made by the President & CEO and support the cultivation of new relationships that serve the strategic priorities of the Leadership Conference.
  • Create and edit acknowledgment letters and other written communications from the President & CEO to principal stakeholders.
  • Serve as a liaison between staff, the Senior Leadership Team, department leads, and the President & CEO.
  • Support the collaboration of the Senior Leadership Team to ensure that the organization's strategic direction is consistent.
  • Manage large cross-functional projects by identifying and bringing together the internal stakeholders necessary to help drive them.
  • Work with the President & CEO to set strategic priorities and identify areas requiring planning and attention.
  • Assess the efficacy of current processes and establish organizational procedures for optimized efficiency and productivity.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study; a Master's Degree in Non-Profit Management, Political Science, Public Policy, or Law is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in a leadership/management role.
  • Commitment to The Leadership Conference mission and a record of engagement with civil rights and social justice issues.
  • Experience in strategy building and program implementation, with a focus on advocacy campaigns.
  • Highly experienced with project coordination and management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a knack for relationship-building and collaboration across varying departments.
  • Proven track record of implementing institutional policies, programs, and activities.
  • Detail-oriented and data-driven with the ability to analyze and compile large data sets.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Internet research skills.
  • Impeccable time management and multi-tasking skills.
