The Chief of Staff is responsible for educating both clients and hospital associates on all aspects of pet health, thereby contributing to the development and maintenance of the human-pet bond. In collaboration with the Practice Manager, the Chief of Staff operates an effective veterinary medical team, ensures a safe and engaging hospital environment, and works towards improving both medical quality and business performance. The role requires a balance between leadership duties and practicing veterinarian responsibilities, with an expected ratio of approximately 20%-30% leadership and 70%-80% veterinary duties. Leadership responsibilities include exemplifying the Five Principles of Mars, Inc., managing the hospital alongside the Practice Manager, training the team on Banfield guidelines, and ensuring compliance with protocols. The Chief of Staff also plays a pivotal role in mentoring Associate Veterinarians, developing their professional potential, and maintaining effective communication within the team and with clients. On the veterinary side, the Chief of Staff is responsible for establishing trust with clients, performing diagnostic workups, developing treatment plans, and ensuring the delivery of preventive care. This includes practicing evidence-based medicine, maintaining complete medical records, and leading the veterinary team through daily schedules. The Chief of Staff must also advocate for preventive care and wellness plans, ensuring the safety of pets, clients, and associates by adhering to standard practice guidelines and maintaining a clean and organized environment. Overall, the Chief of Staff is a leader who inspires the team, drives performance metrics, and ensures that the hospital operates efficiently while providing the highest quality care to pets and exceptional service to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the hospital to ensure high-quality veterinary care and exceptional client service.
  • Advocate for pets and their quality of life, building long-term relationships with clients.
  • Educate clients and hospital associates on all aspects of pet health.
  • Partner with the Practice Manager to operate an effective veterinary medical team.
  • Train and supervise associates to ensure compliance with Banfield guidelines and practices.
  • Oversee client service training and effectively resolve client issues.
  • Identify bottlenecks in medical operations and formulate solutions to improve efficiency.
  • Partner with leadership to interview, select, train, and develop hospital associates.
  • Create and maintain veterinarians' schedules to meet client needs according to Banfield guidelines.
  • Act as a communications liaison, holding routine team meetings and sharing business information.
  • Develop annual planning, budgeting, and productivity levels for the hospital.
  • Participate in market-level teams and initiatives to execute market objectives and strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with all practice policies and procedures and local, state, and federal laws.
  • Establish trust with clients through effective preventive care and treatment plans.
  • Lead the veterinary hospital team through daily schedules and caseloads, delegating tasks as necessary.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree required.
  • Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with the applicable state veterinary board.
  • Two years clinical experience required.
  • 1-3 years coaching and developing associate doctors required.
  • Proven ability to perform all basic surgeries and use standard medical instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple tasks under distracting conditions.
  • Demonstrated organizational ability and systematic approach in carrying out assignments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to translate problems into practical solutions.
  • Commitment to continual learning and professional development.
