About the position

The Chief of Staff for the Division of Public Safety plays a crucial role in advising the Executive Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police and Command Staff on various campus and community issues. This position also serves as the Chief Communications Officer, focusing on enhancing communication and engagement between the police department and the community, improving customer service, and ensuring accurate information dissemination regarding public safety operations.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze data to advise and draft responses on campus and community issues.
  • Drive efforts to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the executive team and departmental staff.
  • Coordinate and guide the implementation of departmental strategic objectives and goals.
  • Attend and conduct meetings on behalf of the EDPSCOP during their absence.
  • Serve as a confidant and advisor to the EDPSCOP for high-level discussions.
  • Create better reporting systems and conflict resolution strategies for employee complaints.
  • Collaborate with executive team members to prioritize business strategies that build trust.
  • Anticipate potential crisis communications needs and proactively address them.
  • Prepare presentations for campus administrators and stakeholders on Division initiatives.
  • Assist with the Division's annual budgeting activities.
  • Identify training opportunities to enhance communication skills of Division employees.
  • Supervise administrative personnel.
  • Plan and implement comprehensive communication programming and public relations activities.
  • Supervise communications positions and manage media relations.
  • Develop and publish annual reports and creative content for communications platforms.
  • Identify storytelling opportunities to inform the public about Division operations.
  • Compose executive communications addressing priority issues.
  • Lead the Division's responses to Freedom of Information Act requests.
  • Respond to inquiries from community members and maintain strategic branding initiatives.
  • Cultivate and use analytics data to inform marketing needs and activities.
  • Participate in recruiting and hiring initiatives for the Division.
  • Maintain availability outside of normal working hours for emergent issues.
  • Issue Clery Act timely warnings and emergency notifications as required.
  • Represent the Division at campus-level meetings and collaborate with other units.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum four years of experience in supporting Public Safety management and administrative operations.
  • Strong communication, writing, and editing skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage stressful situations.
  • High level interpersonal skills, including tact, discretion, and good judgment.
  • Understanding of the Urbana-Champaign campus academic and administrative structure.
  • Ability to work independently and handle confidential issues.
