About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Birch Aquarium is a strategic leadership role responsible for developing and executing operational plans that align with the aquarium's mission and strategic direction. The COO oversees all operational aspects, including administration, finance, human resources, IT systems, facilities maintenance, marketing, visitor services, and guest experience. This position plays a crucial role in managing a budget of approximately $14 million and a staff of over 175, while fostering an inclusive and effective work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute operating plans to support Birch Aquarium's mission and strategic direction.
  • Oversee organizational strategy, business development, and operational execution.
  • Manage all operational aspects including administration, finance, human resources, IT systems, and facilities maintenance.
  • Lead annual and long-term strategic and budget planning, overseeing an annual budget of approximately $14M.
  • Drive new business initiatives that contribute to the aquarium's long-term fiscal sustainability.
  • Foster an effective team-oriented, inclusive, and equitable work environment through communication and problem-solving.
  • Implement effective change management strategies across multiple scales.

Requirements

  • Minimum five years of experience managing operations of a multi-million dollar aquarium, zoo, museum, science center, or related operation.
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing complex annual strategic and budget plans.
  • Proven ability to think and act strategically in a fast-changing environment.
  • Strong entrepreneurial skills to identify opportunities and manage projects effectively.
  • Excellent team player with strong emotional intelligence and adaptability.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public funding sources and grant proposal processes.
  • Knowledge of aquarium, museum, and non-profit operational standards.
