About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Birch Aquarium is a strategic leadership role responsible for developing and executing operational plans that align with the aquarium's mission and strategic direction. The COO oversees all operational aspects, including administration, finance, human resources, IT, marketing, visitor services, and special events, while managing a budget of approximately $14 million and a staff of over 175. This position is integral to advancing the aquarium's community engagement and business model, particularly in light of upcoming capital improvements and new initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute operating plans to support Birch Aquarium's mission and strategic direction.
  • Oversee organizational strategy, business development, and operational execution.
  • Manage all operational aspects including administration, finance, human resources, IT systems, and facilities maintenance.
  • Lead annual and long-term strategic and budget planning, overseeing an annual budget of approximately $14M.
  • Drive new business initiatives that contribute to the aquarium's long-term fiscal sustainability.
  • Foster an effective team-oriented, inclusive, and equitable work environment through effective communication and problem-solving.
  • Implement effective change management strategies across multiple scales.

Requirements

  • Minimum five years of experience managing operations of a multi-million dollar aquarium, zoo, museum, science center, or related operation.
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in developing and managing complex annual strategic and budget plans.
  • Proven strategic thinking and planning skills to navigate changing social and economic environments.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to identify opportunities and manage projects effectively.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and adaptability, with a team player attitude.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of public funding sources and grant proposal processes.
  • Experience in budget and fund management under labor contracts and personnel policies.
