About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) at the Center for Constitutional Rights is a newly established role aimed at providing strategic leadership and oversight for the organization's core operations, including Finance, IT, Human Resources, and Facilities. This position is critical in aligning the internal operations of the Center with its external values of justice, equity, and inclusion, which are fundamental to the organization's mission. The COO will report directly to the Executive Director and will be an integral part of both the Leadership Team and the Management Team, collaborating closely with other senior leaders to shape the organization's strategy, culture, and performance. In this role, the COO will manage a team of 3 to 4 directors overseeing the core operational functions. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in nonprofit management, financial strategy, technology, and human resources, particularly in unionized settings. The COO will be responsible for optimizing the organizational infrastructure to support staff in fulfilling their responsibilities and ensuring effective communication across all levels of the organization. This includes overseeing significant projects such as the renovation of the newly acquired office space, ensuring that the Center's operations reflect its deeply progressive values. The successful candidate will be an inclusive and human-centered leader, adept at fostering a culture of transparency and collaboration. They will have a proven track record of developing and nurturing trust within teams, promoting accountability, and implementing policy reforms that align with the Center's commitment to social justice. The COO will also play a key role in navigating union relations and ensuring that the organization's practices are consistent with its values of equity and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for the Finance, IT, Human Resources, and Facilities functions.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Management Team to cultivate a culture of transparency, equity, and inclusion.
  • Lead the development and implementation of internal policies that align with the organization's commitment to social justice.
  • Serve on the Leadership and Management teams, providing strategic input on the organization's direction and priorities.
  • Continuously assess and optimize operational systems to enhance collaboration and efficiency across the organization.
  • Oversee the organization's budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance with nonprofit regulations.
  • Lead the development and implementation of inclusive and equitable human resources policies and practices.
  • Oversee union contract negotiations and implementation, ensuring compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Manage the renovation of the newly acquired office space, collaborating with external consultants and construction teams.
  • Support the recruitment, development, and retention of diverse talent across the organization.

Requirements

  • 13+ years of experience in nonprofit operations and financial management or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Proven success in fostering inclusive organizational cultures and leading change to align culture with communication, actions, and policies.
  • Solid background in financial strategy and management, including budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial and operations planning.
  • Significant experience in human resources management, particularly within unionized environments, with a focus on organizational culture development.
  • Experience in managing large-scale projects, particularly in facilities renovation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop diverse teams in a collaborative and inclusive manner.
  • Strategic thinker with a track record of driving organizational change and innovation.
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with staff, board members, and external stakeholders.
  • Tech-savvy, with a solid understanding of IT infrastructure and digital security best practices.
