About the position

The Chief Operating Officer / Chief Clinical Officer will play a pivotal role in managing, directing, coordinating, and controlling the overall operations of a hospital. This position is responsible for ensuring that the hospital meets its strategic objectives while delivering quality and economical healthcare services. The COO/CCO will initiate and enforce organization-wide policies and procedures that support the hospital's objectives and programs, ensuring that nursing and clinical departments align with the needs of the patient population served. The role requires overseeing the organization of nursing and clinical departments according to administrative and nursing service guidelines, ensuring compliance with legal, organizational, and medical staff standards. The COO/CCO will have the authority and responsibility for establishing, directing, and implementing the Standards of Nursing Practice and managing clinical operations and financial matters related to all nursing and clinical care areas. This position also emphasizes the importance of promoting a culture of safety and quality, encouraging employees to identify safety issues and enhance safety practices for both employees and patients. In collaboration with the Market CEO, the COO/CCO will direct strategic planning for the hospital, develop and communicate hospital policies, objectives, and operational procedures, and contribute to initiatives outlined in the Strategic Quality Plan. The role includes budget development and monitoring, ensuring that hospital operations do not exceed the approved budget, and overseeing finance/business office functions to ensure appropriate fund management. The COO/CCO will also respond to community needs for quality healthcare services and serve as a member of the hospital executive committee, attending governing board meetings and ensuring compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements. This position is crucial for fostering high employee morale and a positive work environment, ensuring that the hospital maintains its physical properties in a safe and operational state, and acting as the Privacy Officer to implement necessary privacy policies and procedures. The COO/CCO will collaborate with regional leadership to advance safety and quality initiatives, ensuring that the hospital is always prepared for surveys and compliance checks.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, direct, coordinate, and control overall hospital operations.
  • Provide leadership to ensure attainment of strategic objectives and delivery of quality healthcare services.
  • Initiate and enforce organization-wide policies and procedures to support hospital objectives.
  • Oversee nursing and clinical departments according to administrative and nursing service guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, organizational, and medical staff standards.
  • Establish, direct, and implement Standards of Nursing Practice and manage clinical operations.
  • Promote a culture that encourages employees to identify safety issues and enhance safety practices.
  • Direct strategic planning for the hospital in collaboration with the Market CEO.
  • Develop, interpret, and communicate hospital policies, objectives, and operational procedures.
  • Contribute to and lead initiatives outlined in the Strategic Quality Plan.
  • Maintain a system to verify licensure/certification and competency of nursing department members.
  • Develop and monitor the hospital budget, ensuring operations do not exceed the approved budget.
  • Oversee finance/business office functions to ensure appropriate fund management.
  • Ensure staffing plans are appropriate for hospital departments.
  • Respond to community needs for quality healthcare services in coordination with hospital leadership.
  • Serve as a member of the hospital executive committee and attend governing board meetings.
  • Conduct job responsibilities in accordance with the Company's Code of Conduct and applicable laws.
  • Ensure maintenance of physical properties in a safe and operational state.
  • Act as Privacy Officer for the hospital and implement necessary privacy policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required.
  • Master's degree in healthcare administration, business administration, public health, or clinical specialty required.
  • Registered Nurse in the state required.
  • Five years of experience in healthcare administration/management required.
  • Minimum of two years experience at a senior nursing management level in a hospital setting required.
  • Two years' prior COO or CEO level experience preferred.
  • Graduate level education may substitute on a year-to-year basis for the required experience.
