The Chief Operating Officer (COO) plays a pivotal role in the operational management of the hospital, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the hospital, ensuring that all departments, except for Nursing, operate efficiently and effectively. The COO is tasked with driving revenue and sales growth while maintaining strict control over expenses, costs, and margins. This includes managing the hospital's financial goals on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, ensuring that the organization meets its financial targets and remains financially viable. In addition to operational oversight, the COO coordinates facility and program planning, including budget preparation and the formulation of hospital policies. The role requires active representation of the hospital at various professional, civic, and governmental organizations and meetings, fostering relationships that can benefit the hospital's mission and objectives. A key aspect of the COO's responsibilities is partnering with physicians who utilize the hospital's services, which includes taking an active role in their recruitment and retention. The COO collaborates closely with the CEO to ensure that the hospital complies with necessary regulatory and compliance approvals, as well as quality accreditations, working in conjunction with the Chief Nursing Officer. This position also involves creating an environment conducive to attracting and retaining qualified hospital employees, which is essential for maintaining high standards of care and operational excellence. Furthermore, the COO analyzes various areas of the hospital's operations to promote organization-wide performance improvement activities. This includes assisting in the planning of new services that can generate additional profitable revenue streams and managing costs by identifying non-value costs and taking action to eliminate them. The COO participates in the hospital's monthly operation reviews and corporate office meetings as necessary, providing insights and guidance to ensure the hospital's success. In the absence of the CEO, the COO may be required to interpret hospital policy and provide direction to staff.
