About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) at the Asian Law Caucus (ALC) will play a pivotal role in driving and elevating the organization's operations, finance, and human resources functions. This leadership position is crucial as ALC continues to grow, adding new staff and expanding its impact. The COO will collaborate closely with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, Board, and organizational leadership to ensure that ALC's infrastructure supports its ambitious goals. The role involves overseeing a team, optimizing processes, and building systems to ensure operational excellence in support of ALC's mission.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in decision-making on key issues as a member of the Executive Team.
  • Act as a liaison to the Board, drafting agendas and attending meetings.
  • Collaborate with the Deputy Director on organization-wide initiatives.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration across departments to align operational and programmatic goals.
  • Oversee the full employment cycle, including talent management and recruitment.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive organizational culture with the HR team.
  • Lead the Labor Management Committee and maintain relationships with union representatives.
  • Ensure compliance with labor laws and implement supportive HR policies.
  • Lead the transition of financial oversight and build a robust finance function.
  • Run the Board Finance Committee and report on financial matters.
  • Lead ALC's budgeting process in collaboration with the Executive Director and Finance Director.
  • Identify operational efficiencies and drive improvements in systems and processes.
  • Supervise Finance Director, Operations Manager, HR Manager(s), and additional staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent; Master's in Nonprofit Management, Business/Public Administration, Financial Management, or Human Resources is a plus.
  • 10+ years of experience in operations, finance, or human resources, with 5+ years in a senior leadership role.
  • 5+ years of experience in a nonprofit environment, preferably in legal and social justice fields.
  • Demonstrated experience managing cross-functional teams.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership and staff at all levels.
  • Excellent financial management and budgeting skills; familiarity with nonprofit financial standards essential.
  • Knowledge of union environments and experience managing labor relations.
