About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Division of Development at the University of South Carolina will provide strategic leadership and comprehensive operational oversight for critical success areas necessary for a successful $1.5 billion comprehensive campaign. This role encompasses managing human resources, donor relations, strategic communications, strategic planning, and advancement services, including database management, gift processing, and prospect research.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for high-level oversight of human resources functions within the division, including recruitment, training, performance management, and staff development.
  • Develop and implement strategies for effective donor engagement and stewardship, cultivating relationships with alumni, major donors, and corporate/foundation partners.
  • Oversee communication strategies that promote the division's initiatives and enhance the university's public image, ensuring consistent messaging across all platforms.
  • Collaborate with Development leadership to create and implement long-term strategic plans that align with fundraising goals and institutional priorities.
  • Manage key advancement services functions, including database management, gift processing, and prospect research, ensuring data integrity and effective utilization of analytics.
  • Work collaboratively with the Chief Development Officer on campaign performance metrics and program efficiencies, providing oversight of campaign preparation.
  • Ensure adherence to university policies, legal regulations, and ethical standards in all development activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 12 years of experience, including some prior management experience.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated business acumen in development operations.
  • Ability to lead a team of professionals to achieve goals and complete strategic projects.
  • Ability to communicate with a broad range of personalities with tact and diplomacy.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office applications (especially Word and Excel).

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree and 8 years' experience in development operations in higher education.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience and understanding of the philanthropic process, higher education, and fundraising programs.
