About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a pivotal leadership role at Jersey City Medical Center, responsible for the development and execution of key business strategies while overseeing the day-to-day operations of the facility. The COO's primary focus is to ensure an exceptional patient-centered care experience, delivering safe, efficient, and high-quality outcomes through a highly engaged team. This executive will collaborate closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to enhance market share for the hospital, organize and expand service lines, and influence stakeholders through active participation in physician and community advisory groups. In this role, the COO will work to achieve the strategic objectives of Jersey City Medical Center, strengthening operations through effective leadership and alignment with the articulated goals of the health system. The COO will maintain regular communication with the CEO regarding the status of major initiatives, significant operational issues, and matters affecting institutional policies. Additionally, the COO will manage a substantial portion of the hospital's multi-million dollar budget and oversee a significant number of full-time equivalents (FTEs). The COO will also engage with the CEO and senior management team on operational and strategic planning, setting goals and priorities, and ensuring effective collaboration with all clinical areas, including physicians and nurses. The overarching goal is to improve patient satisfaction, enhance the quality of patient care, and drive operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will foster a culture of engagement, teamwork, and accountability, exemplifying leadership excellence and operational acumen. This seasoned operations leader will be knowledgeable in population health management, financial management, hospital operations, and quality improvement methods.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop, and execute key business strategies for Jersey City Medical Center.
  • Direct and administer the day-to-day operations of the facility in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with the CEO to gain market share and grow service lines.
  • Participate in physician and community involvement and advisory groups to influence stakeholders.
  • Manage a significant portion of the hospital's multi-million dollar budget and oversee a large number of FTEs.
  • Work with senior management on operational and strategic planning, developing goals and objectives.
  • Ensure effective partnerships with clinical areas to improve patient satisfaction and care quality.
  • Cultivate a culture of engagement, teamwork, and accountability within the organization.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of ten years of healthcare experience demonstrating requisite job knowledge and abilities.
  • At least five years of executive leadership experience within a teaching hospital in a multi-hospital system.
  • Proven leadership experience within a matrixed organizational structure.
  • Prior engagement in service line operations and physician relations.
  • Successful experience partnering with unions is strongly preferred.
