About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Broward County Transportation Department is a pivotal executive leadership role responsible for overseeing the Operations Division, which encompasses bus, rail, and paratransit services. The COO will provide strategic direction and operational management to ensure the safe, secure, and efficient movement of citizens within Broward County, which is home to over 1.9 million residents. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of the transportation landscape, particularly as the department transitions from a bus-only organization to a multi-modal provider of public transportation. This includes the integration of heavy rail, light rail, automated people mover systems, bus rapid transit, and high-frequency bus services under the Premium Mobility (PREMO) plan. The COO will be tasked with executive oversight of the department's operations, focusing on financial performance, strategic planning, employee development, and safety promotion. The incumbent will also serve as a customer advocate, ensuring that the needs and concerns of the community are addressed. This role involves close collaboration with federal, state, and local governments, as well as regional agencies and community stakeholders, to identify and prioritize transportation needs. The COO will analyze existing policies and procedures, making recommendations for improvements and ensuring that the department adheres to industry standards and best practices. In this executive position, the COO will advise the Transportation Director on strategic issues and resolutions, requiring a strong background in administration and management within the public transit or transportation sectors. The role demands a proactive approach to leadership, with a focus on developing high-capacity transit programs and managing bargaining units effectively. Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in safety systems management, finance, business or public administration, engineering, organizational dynamics, consumer behavior, technology, or a closely related field.
  • Six years of progressively responsible experience in administration and management in public transit, transportation, hospitality, consumer technology, heavy-infrastructure, logistics, or closely related fields.
  • Experience managing bargaining units and developing high-capacity transit programs is preferred.
