About the position

Cutten Fields, a prestigious private golf and tennis club located in Guelph, Ontario, is seeking a dedicated Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead the organization into its next chapter. Established in 1931 and now owned by the University of Guelph, Cutten Fields boasts a rich history and a commitment to providing an exceptional experience for its members. The club features an 18-hole championship golf course and four Har-Tru clay indoor tennis courts, serving over 700 adult members. With a strong financial position and annual revenue of $6 million, the club has recently completed significant renovations, including new bent grass greens and an air-supported structure for the tennis courts. The COO will play a pivotal role in managing all aspects of the club's operations, ensuring that the club's mission of delivering a high-quality, enjoyable experience is met. This position involves overseeing the relationships between the club and its Board of Directors, members, guests, employees, and the broader community. The COO will be responsible for implementing and monitoring the club's budget, maintaining the quality of services, and safeguarding the club's assets. This leadership role requires a strategic thinker who can navigate the complexities of club governance, financial oversight, and member services while fostering a positive and engaging environment for both staff and members. As the club transitions to new leadership following the retirement of the current COO after 22 years, the incoming COO will be tasked with continuing the legacy of excellence and innovation at Cutten Fields. This includes leading the management team, developing and executing strategic plans, and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in the private club or hospitality industry, with proven experience in management, financial planning, and relationship building.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of the club's operations, including activities and relationships with the Board of Directors, members, guests, employees, and the community.
  • Coordinate and administer the club's policies as defined by the Board of Directors.
  • Develop operating policies and procedures and direct the work of all department managers.
  • Implement and monitor the club's budget, ensuring maximum member and guest satisfaction.
  • Lead the management team in governance, including implementing policies and developing strategic goals with the Board.
  • Monitor long- and short-term objectives and financial reports, preparing a financial plan in consultation with the Controller.
  • Oversee the care and maintenance of all the club's physical assets and facilities, ensuring cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Coordinate marketing and member-relations programs to promote the club's services and facilities.
  • Handle emergencies and ensure adequate safety measures are in place to protect members and club assets.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in business or hospitality is preferred.
  • 5 years of experience in the private club or hospitality industry with management and supervisory experience.
  • Experience managing complex capital projects is required.
  • Experience working with volunteer committees is preferred.
  • Understanding of Board and Governance practices is an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain budgets; experience with purchasing and negotiating contracts is an asset.
  • Proven relationship development, management, and client service delivery experience.
