About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will report directly to the President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and will work alongside program vice presidents to enhance the internal organization processes, practices, operations, and infrastructure of the Downtown Seattle Association (DSA). The COO's primary responsibility is to ensure that the DSA effectively carries out its mission to create a healthy, vibrant Downtown. This role involves leading a team and overseeing various functions including financial management, human resources, general operations, legal, information technology, risk management, analysis, and office management. The COO will collaborate closely with program VPs to support the execution of strategic initiatives, programs, and organizational growth. In terms of financial management, the COO will work with the VP of Finance to manage and oversee all financial and business planning activities, which includes an annual budget exceeding $20 million. Responsibilities will include administering all financial functions, overseeing business policies and accounting practices, developing financial reports, and advising the CEO on financial decision-making and long-range planning. The COO will also lead the organizational budgeting process and ensure that relevant financial data is presented to the CEO and senior management team. The human resources function will be overseen in collaboration with the Director of Human Resources, focusing on recruitment, hiring, compensation, benefits administration, professional training, and regulatory compliance. The COO will also manage research and strategic initiatives, ensuring that data-driven performance and decision-making are prioritized across the organization. In the realm of information technology, the COO will work with technology vendors to maintain and update information systems and infrastructure. Office management responsibilities will include overseeing administrative functions to ensure smooth daily operations and a welcoming work environment. The COO will also staff the DSA Finance and MID Finance Committees, coordinating closely with the DSA Treasurer and MID Finance Chair to develop agendas and present financials. The COO will collaborate with the management team to enhance infrastructure and processes to accommodate the organization’s growth objectives, oversee risk management and insurance policies, and ensure compliance with legal requirements. This role requires exceptional interpersonal skills, operational leadership experience, and a commitment to the core values and mission of the DSA.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and enhance internal organization processes, practices, operations, and infrastructure.
  • Manage financial management and oversight with an annual budget exceeding $20 million.

  • Develop and analyze financial reports and support the CEO in financial decision-making.

  • Ensure regulatory oversight and legal compliance in human resources.
  • Oversee analysis and research projects to ensure data-driven performance and decision-making.
  • Ensure ongoing maintenance and updating of information systems and infrastructure.
  • Oversee administrative functions for office spaces ensuring smooth daily operations.
  • Staff the DSA Finance and MID Finance Committees and conduct meetings.
  • Collaborate with the management team to enhance infrastructure and processes for growth objectives.
  • Oversee risk management and insurance policies, ensuring sufficient coverage.
  • Coordinate legal activities and oversee all tax and regulatory filings.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated expertise in administrative functions including accounting, financial planning, and analysis.
  • Strong operational leadership experience with at least 10 years in a senior operations management role.
  • Highly skilled in organizational development, personnel management, and strategic planning.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with a dynamic leadership team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with an emphasis on business writing and editing.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, able to work under deadlines and high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a high-performing team and assess challenges quickly.
