About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) at the Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA plays a crucial role in supporting the organization's mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. As a member of the CEO's senior leadership team, the COO is responsible for overseeing branch operations, leading branch executives, and enhancing program deployment and customer satisfaction across the association. This position emphasizes collaboration, community engagement, and the development of effective systems to ensure the YMCA's operational success.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises branch executive directors to ensure sound operations and addresses systemic issues.
  • Provides leadership and direction to branches by coaching executives and guiding branch boards and volunteers.
  • Ensures operational growth through program expansion, member recruitment, pricing strategies, and new site development.
  • Ensures compliance with YMCA standards and strives for high program quality.
  • Monitors financial reports to meet revenue targets and control expenses.
  • Creates sustainable collaborations and programming to achieve YMCA goals.
  • Assists in the planning and development of maintenance and improvements to properties and facilities.
  • Partners with the board and community to meet community needs effectively.
  • Leads long-range strategic planning in collaboration with the CEO and monitors performance against objectives.
  • Represents the CEO in the community as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in human services, business, social services, or equivalent work experience.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
  • Eight or more years of professional experience in the YMCA or another nonprofit preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in operations, including staff supervision, membership practices, program development, and financial practices.
  • Understanding of the YMCA's nature and purpose, including the roles of volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups and build authentic relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in nonprofit leadership roles outside of the YMCA.
  • Advanced degree in a related field.
