About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will oversee the execution of the quarterly business plan for a fast-growing, woman-owned family and criminal law firm. This role is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling day-to-day operations, ensuring alignment with growth, revenue, and profitability goals. The COO will collaborate closely with the owner and key staff on strategy, policy, and decision-making, while managing a significant budget and a team of 22 to 50 employees.

Responsibilities

  • Execute the firm's business plan and meet quarterly gross revenue and profitability metrics.
  • Collaborate with the owner to design and implement business strategies, plans, and procedures.
  • Evaluate performance by analyzing and interpreting data and metrics.
  • Supervise the work of non-lawyer support staff and vendors.
  • Lead recruitment, hiring, onboarding, performance feedback, evaluations, and general human resources operations, including payroll and benefits.
  • Ensure that the firm's business policies and procedures are fully documented, organized, deployed, and audited.
  • Oversee operations informed by monthly financial reporting and ongoing tax planning/preparation guidance.
  • Employ best practices to manage in-person, remote, hybrid, W2, and 1099 team members effectively.
  • Ensure the digital plant is fully functional and secure for the entire team.
  • Respond to ongoing risk assessments to mitigate exposure.
  • Manage projects by designing strategic tasks and leveraging process owners within set timelines.
  • Demonstrate effective leadership strategies that build a positive professional culture and promote retention.

Requirements

  • Degree in management, business management, human resources, or related field.
  • Prior experience running a professional services firm or a division/department of a mid-sized/large professional services firm with an annual budget of at least $9M.
  • Experience managing a team of at least 30 with autonomy to hire and fire.
  • Evidence of success in designing, monitoring, and reconciling a budget of at least $9 million.
  • Strong judgment in decision-making in a senior management role.
  • Experience in using key financial reports to monitor and drive the business.

Nice-to-haves

  • SHRM or HRCI certifications.
  • Experience with ScalingUp.
