About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) at American University is responsible for overseeing the strategic priorities and daily operations of WAMU, the university's public radio station. This role involves managing critical business functions such as finance, human resources, technology, and facilities, while also fostering community engagement and digital innovation. The COO will work closely with the executive team to develop tactical plans that align with the organization's strategic objectives, ensuring the effective stewardship of the operating budget and promoting diversity and inclusion within the workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operations to achieve revenue and business objectives.
  • Build and implement an overall operation plan to advance WAMU's annual strategies.
  • Regularly review operational results and analyze KPIs to monitor progress and inform decisions.
  • Establish clear goals and objectives, communicating them effectively to the team.
  • Inspire a culture of excellence that embraces diversity and innovation.
  • Mentor and develop staff through professional development opportunities.
  • Provide oversight for WAMU's business administration team, including financial planning and budget management.
  • Oversee technical operations and facilities management, ensuring strong communication with university departments.
  • Manage human resources functions, including talent management and employee relations.
  • Strategically manage the external sales team responsible for annual sponsorship income.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with various stakeholders and partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in business administration, preferably in a large media organization or complex institution.
  • Strong project, financial, and human capital management skills.
  • Demonstrated team building experience with an ability to coach, lead, and inspire.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to use data and analytics to inform decision-making.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree or equivalent.
  • Experience with organizational design and structure.
  • Knowledge of legal compliance, including FCC and labor laws.
