About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) at American University is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and strategic priorities of WAMU, the university's public radio station. Reporting directly to the General Manager, the COO will manage critical business functions including finance, human resources, technology, and facilities, while also driving initiatives for audience expansion, digital innovation, and community engagement. This role requires strong leadership and management skills to ensure operational excellence and alignment with the organization's strategic objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operations to achieve revenue and business objectives.
  • Build and implement an overall operation plan to advance WAMU's annual strategies.
  • Regularly review operational results and analyze KPIs to monitor progress and inform decisions.
  • Establish clear goals and objectives, communicating them effectively to the team.
  • Inspire a culture of excellence that embraces diversity and innovation.
  • Mentor and develop staff through professional development opportunities.
  • Provide oversight for WAMU's business administration team, including financial planning and budget management.
  • Oversee technical operations and facilities management, ensuring effective communication with university departments.
  • Manage human resources functions, including talent management and employee relations.
  • Strategically manage the external sales team responsible for annual sponsorship income.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with various stakeholders to enhance WAMU's brand.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in business administration, preferably in a large media organization.
  • Strong project, financial, and human capital management skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data and analytics for decision-making.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree or equivalent.
  • Experience with organizational design and legal compliance, including FCC regulations.
