About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Shipman & Goodwin LLP is responsible for establishing an effective organizational structure for firm-wide practice support. This role encompasses leadership across various functional areas including finance, human resources, information technology, marketing, and practice support services. The COO will manage the firm's general business operations, promote strategic planning efforts, and ensure compliance and continuous improvement in administrative processes.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and manage the firm's functional areas: Finance, HR/Talent, Marketing, IT, and Facilities/Operations.
  • Refine, implement, and maintain firm-wide administrative processes for compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate with General Counsel's office to assess and prevent business risks.
  • Collaborate with Finance & Accounting Directors to improve financial controls and analyze financial reports.
  • Manage and oversee administrative department leads, ensuring alignment with business objectives and performance goals.
  • Build strong relationships with firm leadership to support revenue production and strategic goals.
  • Promote the CORE values of the Firm and participate in key committees related to administrative operations.

Requirements

  • Substantial management experience in a law firm or professional service industry.
  • Completion of an MBA or equivalent business degree, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in law firm leadership/management, preferably in New England.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with legal or other professional service organizations.
  • Project management experience with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
