About the position

The Chief People Officer (CPO) for MUSC Charleston Division will be responsible for leading the Charleston Division, including the Orangeburg location. This position reports jointly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the MUSC Charleston Division and the Chief Physician Executive (CPE) for MUSC Physicians, and indirectly to the MUSC System Chief People Officer (SCPO). The CPO will assess and determine the current and future needs of the HR function and HR Team, working collaboratively across MUSC to develop and communicate people plans and human capital strategies in support of organizational objectives. The CPO will oversee MUSC Health's human resource team that supports both the Charleston Medical Center, MUSC Physicians, and MUSC Orangeburg, with a strong emphasis on employee engagement and development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Charleston Division's HR function, including compensation and benefits, change management, performance management, talent management, and workforce development.
  • Drive positive employee engagement and development of care team members and internal leaders.
  • Implement cultural and organizational change initiatives.
  • Develop a business performance model to ensure the organization has the necessary human capital and leadership.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to achieve organizational goals and implement strategic initiatives.
  • Monitor and improve employee engagement and retention.
  • Design and implement successful organization and individual assessment and development programs.
  • Facilitate the development of a high-performing cross-functional executive team.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive leadership experience, with at least 5 years of executive HR experience.
  • Experience as a Chief HR Officer in a physician-led healthcare system.
  • Strong business acumen to contribute to operations across multiple hospitals and physician practices.
  • Data-driven management approach to decision-making.
  • Experience in driving cultural and organizational change.
  • Proven track record of building and mentoring teams to achieve goals.
  • Significant HR experience as an executive business partner.
  • Exemplary leadership experience in developing high-performance organizations.
  • Healthcare industry experience is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Head of HR experience at an Academic Medical Center (AMC) is preferred.
  • HR certifications such as SPHR are strongly preferred.
  • A track record of high performance in a heavily matrixed organization is preferred.
