About the position

Ascend is seeking a Chief People Officer (CPO) to lead the development and execution of a comprehensive talent strategy for its team of nearly 1,000 employees. The CPO will report to the President and work closely with the board and executive team to foster a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist workforce. This role is pivotal in shaping the organizational culture and ensuring that Ascend's commitment to educational equity is reflected in its people practices. The CPO will oversee the People Team, including Talent Recruitment, People Operations, and Human Resources, and will play a key role in strategic decision-making to enhance staff engagement and retention.

Responsibilities

  • Set the vision, goals, and measures of success for the People Team, including Talent and Human Resources sub-teams.
  • Hire, develop, coach, and retain a high-performing, diverse People Team.
  • Oversee the talent development of Ascend's network team.
  • Support the executive team in shaping and reinforcing an organizational culture that reflects Ascend's commitment to DEIA.
  • Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, influencing discussions about Ascend's strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with the board and organizational leaders to support DEIA through aligned policies and practices.
  • Develop a performance management and compensation approach for the CEO and executive team.
  • Model and facilitate a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
  • Assess overall organizational health and DEIA practices to attract and retain a diverse team of high performers.
  • Create and implement a multi-year people vision and strategy that aligns with Ascend's strategic plan.
  • Design and build cohesive human capital structures and systems for a best-in-class people function.
  • Develop and implement change management strategies for organizational talent initiatives.

Requirements

  • At least ten years of professional experience in talent strategy and people management/development, with HR experience preferred.
  • Experience in the education sector is strongly preferred.
  • Track record of successfully building and managing inclusive, high-performing, diverse teams.
  • Experience creating and improving systems to support change.
  • Ability to leverage technology for insights and efficiency.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university required; advanced degree in a related field preferred.
