About the position

The Chief People Officer (CPO) at Ascend Network is a strategic leadership role responsible for developing and overseeing the end-to-end talent strategy for nearly 1,000 employees across 17 K-12 public charter schools in Brooklyn. The CPO will set the vision for attracting, engaging, developing, and retaining staff while embedding a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism (DEIA) within the organization. This role involves collaborating with the executive team and board to shape organizational priorities and ensure a high-performing, inclusive workplace that supports the mission of Ascend.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the end-to-end people strategy for all Ascend employees.
  • Set the vision, goals, and measures of success for the People Team.
  • Hire, develop, coach, and retain a high-performing, diverse People Team.
  • Support and push the executive team in shaping and reinforcing an organizational culture that reflects Ascend's commitment to DEIA.
  • Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, influencing discussions about strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with the board and organizational leaders to support DEIA through aligned policies and practices.
  • Model and facilitate a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
  • Create and implement a phased, multi-year people vision and strategy that aligns with Ascend's strategic plan.
  • Design and build cohesive human capital structures and systems for a best-in-class people function.
  • Develop and implement change management strategies for large-scale organizational talent initiatives.

Requirements

  • At least ten years of professional experience in talent strategy and people management/development, with HR experience preferred.
  • Experience in the education sector is strongly preferred.
  • Track record of successfully building and managing inclusive, high-performing, diverse teams.
  • Experience leveraging technology to gain insight and increase efficiency.
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university is required; an advanced degree in a related field is highly preferred.

  • Experience in change management and organizational development.
  • Strong understanding of performance management and compensation strategies.
  • Familiarity with data analysis to drive talent strategies.
