About the position

The Chief, Research Engagement and General Collections Division at the Library of Congress is responsible for overseeing the management and direction of multiple sections within the General and International Collections Directorate. This role involves setting strategies for acquiring, developing, and digitizing collections, ensuring diversity in collections development, and enhancing user services. The Chief is tasked with facilitating research and reference instruction, coordinating outreach, and ensuring an outstanding research experience for a diverse array of users. The position requires strong leadership and management skills to supervise staff and maintain operational effectiveness while promoting a culture of inclusivity and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and direct the Research Engagement and General Collections Division, overseeing seven sections.
  • Set strategies for acquiring, developing, digitizing, and making collections discoverable.
  • Ensure diversity in collections development and user services.
  • Implement innovative onsite and online services to support research.
  • Facilitate research and reference instruction and support both onsite and virtually.
  • Coordinate library outreach and engagement with diverse communities.
  • Supervise staff performing work up to the GS-15 level, providing administrative and technical supervision.
  • Establish guidelines and performance expectations for staff, conducting performance evaluations.
  • Provide expert advice to senior management on various programs and policies.
  • Build effective working relationships with high-level individuals and agencies.

Requirements

  • Experience with modern librarianship principles related to collections and researcher services.
  • Proven record of managing library functions and delivering responsive research support services.
  • Ability to lead and inspire change within an organization.
  • Experience supervising and developing a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to provide program oversight and administrative management to agency programs.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in digital scholarship and social media engagement.
  • Knowledge of assessment activities in research services.
  • Familiarity with legislative and executive agency operations.
