About the position

The Special Education Instructional Assistant at Chief Sealth High School plays a crucial role in supporting special needs students within both regular and self-contained classrooms. This position involves assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of these students, implementing educational plans, monitoring behavior, and collaborating with teachers and parents to ensure the success of each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in various classroom settings.
  • Adapt classroom activities and materials under the direction of the teacher to facilitate student participation.
  • Administer tests, homework, and other assignments to assist teachers in evaluating student progress.
  • Provide first aid and medical assistance as required for injured students.
  • Support students with personal care needs due to medical conditions or physical limitations.
  • Attend meetings and in-service presentations to acquire relevant job information.
  • Confer regularly with teachers to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Communicate with parents regarding student progress and needs.
  • Implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders to ensure safety and consistency.
  • Instruct students in academic subjects, social skills, and daily living skills in both individual and group settings.
  • Maintain instructional materials and student records to ensure availability and reliability of information.
  • Monitor students in various school environments to provide a safe and positive learning atmosphere.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment, or an associate degree or higher from an accredited institution, or 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher from an accredited college, or completion of a registered paraeducator apprenticeship program.
  • Valid State of Washington Driver's License or equivalent mobility evidence.
  • Training in CPR and First Aid.

Benefits

  • Salary range of $45,472.00 - $61,841.92 annually.
  • Full-time employment with a 1.0 FTE position.
