About the position

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Working America plays a pivotal role in leading the design and development of innovative technology systems and tools that align with the organization's mission of mobilizing working people for better jobs and a fair economy. This position is crucial for enhancing the technological capabilities of Working America, which serves a diverse membership of 4 million individuals. The CTO will work closely with the Chief Information Officer to assess and improve existing systems, processes, and tools, ensuring that the organization remains at the forefront of technological advancement in the labor movement. In this role, the CTO will provide high-level strategic advice to the executive leadership regarding technology architecture, focusing on recommendations that support exponential growth and organizational expansion. The CTO will lead the architecture, design, and development of new technology systems and tools that enhance the organization's operational capacities. This includes designing and implementing technological solutions that streamline workflows and integrate various systems through third-party APIs. The CTO will also engage in Research & Development activities to explore new technologies that can benefit the organization. Establishing strategic partnerships with technology vendors and industry leaders will be essential to foster innovation. The CTO will assess new technologies for compatibility with existing systems and ensure that the technology architecture aligns with the organization's priorities. Additionally, the CTO will have a significant role in managing technology staff, including making recommendations for hiring, promotions, and other personnel decisions. Hands-on development support for ongoing projects will be part of the responsibilities, along with evaluating and managing relationships with consultants and vendors to ensure project timelines are met efficiently. The role may also involve other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of Working America.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-level strategic advice to executive leadership on technology architecture.
  • Lead the architecture/design and development of new technology systems and tools.
  • Design and implement technological solutions, applications, automations, and systems integrations.
  • Perform Research & Development activities to explore new technology.
  • Establish strategic partnerships with technology vendors and industry leaders.
  • Assess new technologies for compatibility and interoperability with existing systems.
  • Align technology architecture with organizational priorities.
  • Recommend hiring, promoting, demoting, and termination of Technology staff.
  • Provide hands-on development support for ongoing projects.
  • Evaluate and manage consultant and vendor relationships.

Requirements

  • 10+ years' related work experience in technology architecture, design, development, and deployment.
  • Expert knowledge of computer systems, networking, database, and software algorithms.
  • Experience in managing technology procurements and reviewing statements of work.
  • Knowledge of programming languages and ability to read and write code.
  • Excellent strategic planning and goal-setting abilities.
  • Experience in fast-paced and complex work environments.
  • Strong research and analytic skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Ability to estimate technical solutions and work long hours as necessary.
