About the position

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing all information technology systems and infrastructure. This position requires a visionary leader who can align technology initiatives with WICHE's mission to enhance higher education and workforce development across the Western states. The CTO will manage IT staff, ensure the security and reliability of IT systems, and facilitate collaboration among various stakeholders to meet organizational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction and operational support for all IT systems at WICHE.
  • Interpret business requirements into hardware, software, and staff support.
  • Ensure the security, effectiveness, and reliability of WICHE's local and cloud infrastructure.
  • Determine business systems and end-user hardware/software needs and develop implementation plans.
  • Maintain documentation for network and telecommunications cabling, firewalls, and wireless LAN equipment.
  • Support and maintain WICHE's Cisco switch fabric and phone system equipment.
  • Manage IT staff with a focus on customer service and professional growth.
  • Resolve maintenance issues related to hardware, software, and data backups in a timely manner.
  • Establish positive relationships with WICHE staff and external vendors.
  • Plan for and address computer and software training needs of the organization.
  • Research and provide solutions for current and future IT needs.
  • Participate in disaster preparedness and planning as directed by the WICHE president.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and at least six years of progressively responsible IT work experience.
  • Experience managing IT staff and complex IT projects.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with coworkers, consultants, and vendors.
  • Significant experience in leading teams for purchasing, configuring, and troubleshooting IT systems.
  • Familiarity with secure wired and wireless network topologies and TCP/IP protocols.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server and client operating systems, network/firewall operating systems, and data backup best practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of SalesForce CRM capabilities and responsibilities.
  • Experience with business continuity/disaster planning and IT data recovery.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ten years' experience in IT leadership within a higher education environment.
  • Project Management certification or successful technology implementation projects.
  • Microsoft, Cisco, and/or (ISC)2 CISSP security credentials.
  • Experience in developing/evaluating training programs for technology applications.
  • Experience with digital accessibility compliance.
