About the position

The Child and Youth Program Direct Care Supervisor is responsible for overseeing a team of direct care professionals and volunteers in a childcare setting at Naval Air Station Patuxent River. This role involves directing work assignments, conducting performance reviews, ensuring compliance with policies, and fostering a safe and developmentally appropriate environment for children and youth. The supervisor will also manage program operations, address personnel concerns, and engage with parents and community partners to enhance program quality and effectiveness.

Responsibilities

  • Directs work to be accomplished by staff and assigns tasks based on priorities and staff capabilities.
  • Conducts annual performance reviews of staff and participates in staffing decisions.
  • Ensures staff receives proper training and addresses performance issues in a timely manner.
  • Supervises an assigned team of direct care professionals and volunteers, implementing personnel actions as needed.
  • Establishes local performance standards and rates employee performance accordingly.
  • Develops staffing schedules and validates classroom opening and closing procedures.
  • Implements developmentally appropriate programs for children and youth, promoting their growth.
  • Coordinates and supervises field trips and conducts quality assurance checks on classroom records.
  • Ensures compliance with policies for children with special needs and provides necessary training to staff.
  • Resolves personnel complaints and recommends corrective actions as necessary.
  • Encourages staff to pursue continuing education and professional development opportunities.
  • Guides staff in administering medication and ensures facility security through safety checks.
  • Engages with parents and community partners to foster positive relationships and program support.

Requirements

  • Specialized experience in the child and/or youth profession or education appropriate to the position.
  • Knowledge of regulations, policies, and standards applicable to Child and Youth Programs (CYP).
  • Understanding of developmentally appropriate programming for children and youth aged 6 weeks to 18 years.
  • Knowledge of child and youth development principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with Federal and State laws regarding child abuse detection and reporting.
  • Experience in leading a team and understanding individual motivation and learning styles.
  • Skills in program planning, organizing, and employee scheduling.
  • Ability to provide leadership, mentoring, and coaching to develop teams.
  • Skills to conduct assessments of children and improve teaching practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Youth Development, Child Development, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a Military childcare setting or similar environment.
