About the position

The Child Life Specialist in the Pediatric Specialty Department is responsible for meeting the psychosocial needs of hospitalized children through a play activity program. This role focuses on providing play opportunities and experiences that minimize the negative emotional and developmental impacts of hospitalization, ensuring that each child's program aligns with regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provides appropriate play activities for ambulatory and bedridden pediatric patients to assist in coping with their illness and hospitalization.
  • Assists children in developing coping strategies through play, recreation, and art.
  • Identifies current patient needs and develops care plan goals in conjunction with other healthcare team members.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary care conferences.
  • Ensures each child's program is consistent with The Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinates the Child Life Program volunteers, including orientation, training, and supervision of volunteers and students.
  • Develops and implements in-service training for hospital staff in the area of Child Life and monitors the effectiveness of the program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in child life or related field OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
  • Basic Life Support certification required.
  • Child Life Specialist Certificate within 12 months of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Current Child Life Specialist certification preferred.
  • Master's degree and one (1) year post-graduate experience preferred.
