About the position

The Child Protective Services Specialist 1 (NY HELPS) position is responsible for receiving and evaluating reports of suspected child abuse and maltreatment. This role involves screening calls, preparing cases for local social service districts, and providing technical assistance to local staff. The position is contingent permanent and requires working evenings, nights, and weekends, with a total of 37.5 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Receive reports of suspected child abuse and maltreatment via the Statewide Child Abuse and Maltreatment telephone hotline.
  • Screen calls for appropriateness and evaluate the information.
  • Prepare and transmit reported cases to local social service districts.
  • Provide technical assistance to local district staff.
  • Screen applicants for childcare, daycare, and related positions in accordance with Social Service Law.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in a human services field.
  • An associate's degree in a human services field AND two years of experience in direct provision of child protective services.
  • Four years of experience in direct provision of child protective services.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in investigating reports of suspected child abuse and maltreatment.
  • Knowledge of Social Service Law.
