About the position

The Child Support Attorney I-IV positions at San Joaquin County's Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) involve providing legal support in child support cases, ensuring that families receive the financial and medical support mandated by the court. Attorneys will work closely with Child Support Officers and legal support staff in a fast-paced environment, handling a high volume of cases. The role requires strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and excellent customer service, as it involves significant public interaction. Advancement within the attorney series is based on seniority and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates, researches, and prepares child support cases for civil litigation and enforcement or criminal prosecution.
  • Presents evidence in preliminary hearings and prepares trial briefs.
  • Litigates or prosecutes child support cases in Superior and Municipal Courts, including presenting opening statements and cross-examining witnesses.
  • Conducts interviews to obtain or provide information regarding child support cases.
  • Negotiates with defense attorneys regarding civil actions or modifications of charges.
  • Performs legal research and analyzes legal issues in pending cases.
  • Prepares correspondence and reports, reviewing case progress with supervisory deputies.
  • May train and advise lower-level attorneys and supervise clerical, research, and investigative staff.

Requirements

  • Active membership in the State Bar of California.
  • For Child Support Attorney II: One year as a Child Support Attorney I or equivalent experience in family law.
  • For Child Support Attorney III: One year as a Child Support Attorney II or two years of full-time family law experience.
  • For Child Support Attorney IV: One year as a Child Support Attorney III or three years of full-time family law experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of probate, bankruptcy, and workers compensation law is desirable but not required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Analytical and logical reasoning abilities.
