About the position

The Child Welfare Specialist I/II/III position at OKDHS focuses on ensuring the safety and well-being of children and families in Oklahoma. This role involves working within various Child Welfare Programs, including Child Protective Services, Family Centered Services, and Permanency Planning. Specialists will engage in investigations, provide direct services, and collaborate with families and community resources to create pathways to hope for Oklahomans. Extensive training is provided to new employees, and the position offers opportunities for professional growth and development.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate allegations of child abuse or neglect.
  • Protect the safety of children and provide services to help families overcome barriers to safety.
  • Preserve and strengthen the protective capacities of parents to keep children in their homes.
  • Provide services that involve family members in their treatment plans.
  • Arrange placements for children that meet their medical, educational, and physical needs.
  • Facilitate the return of children to their homes when possible and arrange permanent plans when necessary.
  • Conduct assessments of children and families and refer them to community services.
  • Participate in investigations of abuse and neglect and prepare case reports.
  • Attend court hearings and provide testimony as needed.
  • Consult with attorneys and tribal partners regarding child protection efforts.

Requirements

  • Completion of 90 hours from an accredited college or university; OR 3 years of experience related to child welfare work; OR a combination of education and experience for Level I.
  • A bachelor's degree in any field or one year of experience as a Child Welfare Specialist for Level II.
  • A Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree plus one year of experience as a Child Welfare Specialist or two years of experience for Level III.

Nice-to-haves
