Politics and Prose Bookstore, located on Connecticut Avenue NW, is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Children and Teens Department bookseller. This position can be either full-time (40 hours per week) or part-time, with a focus on evenings and weekends. As a bookseller in this fast-paced, customer service-oriented environment, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that the operations of the department run smoothly. The workday is varied and engaging, involving a range of tasks from assisting customers of all ages to shelving and organizing book displays. In this role, you will be responsible for providing excellent customer service, which includes assisting customers with their book selections, operating cash registers, and answering phone inquiries. You will also be tasked with carrying and unpacking boxes, shelving books, and designing and maintaining attractive displays that highlight our selection of children and teen literature. A key part of your job will involve reading a variety of backlist and frontlist titles to maintain a strong knowledge of the department's inventory. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to write book reviews for our website and department newsletters, and to host author events that engage our community. This position requires a genuine interest in books for children and teens, as well as the ability to perform both physically and mentally challenging tasks. You will need to be detail-oriented, able to multitask, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. A cooperative spirit and a goal-oriented attitude are essential for success in this role, as is the ability to lift boxes weighing between 25-40 lbs. Experience working with children and/or teens is a plus, but not mandatory.
