About the position

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Sewing Teacher to join our Children's Art Studio located in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. This part-time contract position is set to commence on September 4, 2024, and will run through December 2024. At Maker Studio Kidz, we are dedicated to fostering creativity and skill development in children through a variety of artistic disciplines, with a focus on sewing classes that provide a fun and educational environment. In this role, you will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging sewing lessons that are both educational and enjoyable for students. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in sewing and a passion for teaching children. You will teach students various sewing techniques, including hand stitching, machine sewing, pattern reading, and fabric selection. It is essential to create a positive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel encouraged and supported. You will also prepare and organize sewing materials and supplies for each class, provide individualized instruction and support to students, and monitor their safety while using sewing equipment. Additionally, you will foster creativity and confidence in students, encouraging them to take pride in their work. Communication with parents and guardians about students' progress and upcoming events is also a key responsibility. Participation in staff meetings and professional development opportunities will be required as part of your commitment to the role.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with setting up and cleaning up the sewing area before and after classes.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians about students' progress and upcoming events.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in art, fashion design, or education preferred.
  • Proven experience in sewing and familiarity with various sewing techniques and tools.
  • Experience working with children in an educational or recreational setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patient, energetic, and creative with a genuine love for working with children.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Fashion Design, Art Education, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching sewing to children in a classroom or community setting.
  • Knowledge of child development principles and classroom management techniques.
