About the position

The City Forester is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and managing the City-wide urban forestry and horticultural maintenance program. This role involves supervising staff, coordinating with various stakeholders, and ensuring the health and maintenance of community trees and landscaped areas. The City Forester will also develop policies and procedures for urban forest management and engage in community education and outreach.

Responsibilities

• Plan, review, and evaluate public projects involving trees and foliage; facilitate communication between City staff, contractors, and citizens.
• Supervise the planting, cultivation, and maintenance of trees to ensure their health along city streets and parks.
• Coordinate interdepartmental programs and draft city-wide specifications for forestry care and maintenance.
• Provide instruction and guidance for workers maintaining the forests and trees within the City.
• Monitor and ensure appropriate permitting for forestry-related activities and enforce regulations.
• Manage contract compliance for vendors working on forestry projects and administer service contracts.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in biology, environmental science, forestry, arboriculture, or horticulture.
• Four years of experience in urban forestry or arboriculture, including tree planting and maintenance.
• Two years of supervisory or project management experience.
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
• Must obtain ISA Arborist Certification within one year of appointment.

Nice-to-haves

• Master's degree in a related field.
• Experience with GIS and ArcView software.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal forestry regulations.
