About the position

The City of Jonesboro is seeking a dynamic and grounded individual to serve as a Certified Police Sergeant. This supervisory law enforcement position is responsible for overseeing and managing the work of Patrol Officers in the Field Operations, Training, and Criminal Investigations Unit. The ideal candidate will be public service-focused, community-oriented, and partnership-based, with experience working with a diverse population of engaged residents and businesses. The position requires a high degree of accuracy in processing identification information, criminal backgrounds, and handling drugs, firearms, money, and other property brought into the department. Errors in these areas can have serious consequences, including potential lawsuits against the city. As a Sergeant, the individual will enforce local, state, and federal laws, supervise police officers and other assigned staff, and manage scheduling and coordination of shift changes. The role includes conducting roll calls, training sessions, and inspections of weapons, vehicles, and uniforms. The Sergeant will also maintain administrative records, resolve minor complaints, and provide counseling to subordinates, making recommendations for disciplinary actions when necessary. The position involves participating in criminal investigations, obtaining evidence, preparing cases for filing charges, and testifying in court. Additionally, the Sergeant will coordinate training and development for subordinate officers and may serve as a field training officer. Responsibilities

  • Enforces local, state, and federal laws.
  • Supervises police officers and other assigned staff.
  • Schedules and coordinates shift changes.
  • Trains personnel in proper work methods.
  • Conducts roll call, training, and inspections of weapons, vehicles, and uniforms.
  • Maintains administrative records and shift files.
  • Hears and resolves minor complaints and counsels subordinates.
  • Makes recommendations and/or takes disciplinary action.
  • Analyzes, reviews, and advises personnel regarding work procedures.
  • Conducts annual evaluations of employee performance for Patrol Officers.
  • Participates in investigating criminal law violations within the city limits.
  • Obtains evidence and compiles information regarding crimes.
  • Prepares cases for filing of charges and testifies in court.
  • Coordinates investigations with other agencies.
  • Reviews, approves, and evaluates reports concerning shift activities.
  • Answers inquiries from the public and handles complaints against officers.
  • Coordinates and supervises training and development of subordinate police officers.
  • May coordinate fleet maintenance for all vehicles assigned to the Police Department.
  • Participates in City neighborhood watch programs and educates citizens on crime prevention.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree preferred.
  • Georgia P.O.S.T. Certification required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience as a Certified Peace Officer.
  • GCIC Terminal Operator certification required.
  • RADAR or Laser and Intoxilyzer Certification preferred.
  • GA P.O.S.T. Supervision Levels I, II, III preferred.
  • Valid State of Georgia Driver's License required.
  • Must complete all three modules of supervision training within one (1) year of acquiring Sergeant rank.
