About the position

At IMEG, one of the largest design consulting firms in the U.S., we are excited to offer a career opportunity for a Civil Engineering Graduate - Designer 1 in our Fairfax, VA office. This position is ideal for new graduates looking to kickstart their careers in civil engineering. As a Designer 1, you will work closely with Senior Project Engineers and Project Managers, assisting them with detailed engineering analysis. Your responsibilities will include preparing reports, permit applications, and construction plans, with a focus on areas such as traffic, municipal, and transportation engineering. In this role, you will perform basic calculations related to hydraulic systems, traffic projections, and site earthwork. You will also engage in pipe sizing, channel hydraulics, and traffic impact analysis, among other tasks. The position requires a solid understanding of design techniques and principles, as well as proficiency in tools like AutoCAD Civil 3D. You will be expected to produce high-quality construction documents and interpret state and local design criteria to meet project needs. Responsibilities

  • Assist Senior Project Engineers or Project Managers with detailed engineering analysis.
  • Prepare reports, permit applications, and construction plans.
  • Perform basic calculations such as hydraulic calculations, traffic projections, and site earthwork.
  • Conduct pipe sizing and loading calculations.
  • Analyze channel and culvert hydraulics.
  • Utilize highway capacity software for traffic impact analysis.
  • Design flexible and rigid pavement.
  • Create geometric pavement and site circulation designs.
  • Develop roadway plan/profile design drawings.
  • Compute site grading and earthwork.
  • Design traffic signals.
  • Understand materials and methods relevant to civil engineering projects.
  • Interpret state and local design criteria for specific project needs.
  • Produce high-quality construction documents consistently.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Must have passed the fundamental portion of the professional engineering licensing exam or be actively pursuing a passing score.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in producing precision technical plans and drawings.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office programs and AutoCAD Civil 3D software.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in both oral and written forms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior direct experience in civil engineering is preferred but not required for this entry-level position.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and the ability to complete AutoCAD training sessions quickly is preferred.
