About the position

As a Civil Engineer 4 specializing in water infrastructure at Black & Veatch, you will play a pivotal role in the design and execution of large-scale water and wastewater projects. This position emphasizes the delivery of projects by leading significant portions of various facilities throughout the design, construction, and startup phases. You will be involved hands-on in developing reports and technical memos, completing studies, detailed designs, and specifications, as well as collaborating with team members to complete cost estimates and prepare contract documents. Your participation will extend to scheduling, budgeting, and contract administration for infrastructure projects, which includes business development and proposal preparation. In this role, you will coordinate with internal and external team members on moderately complex projects, assisting in identifying key client interests and drivers. You will communicate these interests to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate client concerns in the performance of work on less complex projects. Your contributions will support the overall mission of Black & Veatch to address humanity's biggest challenges through innovative infrastructure solutions. As part of the BV Operations team, you will align your skills with projects across three market sectors: Governments & Environment, Energy & Process Industries, and Connectivity & Commercial. Responsibilities

  • Perform design of projects from the conceptual and bid phase through design completion for project needs and requirements set by project managers based on client needs.
  • Assist the Engineering Manager in maintaining project schedules and budgets.
  • Assist the Engineering Manager in managing sub-consultants.
  • Interface directly with the client or sub-consultants under the direction of the Engineering Manager.
  • Support business development through writing technical approaches, scopes of work, and presentations to clients.
  • Utilize knowledge of civil concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the water engineering industry.
  • Apply knowledge to complex projects, finding and developing non-standard design solutions to better serve client project specifications.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to less experienced engineers.
  • Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines and project teams.
  • Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables and perform complex research for equipment and/or materials selection.
  • Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Plan and conduct independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Review engineering work and/or assignments of early career professionals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience.
  • Professional engineering registration is preferred or in active pursuit.
  • Thorough understanding of water and wastewater design, including infrastructure, conveyance, and pump stations/lift stations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Licensed PE or ability and interest to obtain PE and/or be in active pursuit of registration.
  • Ability and motivation to lead portions of complex projects with guidance and mentorship.
