The City of Monterey Park is seeking a dedicated and skilled Civil Engineer Assistant to join its Public Works Department. The successful candidate will possess a diverse range of experience in engineering principles, project design, and administration, particularly in the context of water lines and water improvement plans within an aging infrastructure. The role requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various City Departments, supervisors, managers, and contractors in the field. Under general supervision, the Civil Engineer Assistant will perform moderately difficult paraprofessional engineering tasks related to public works design and plan checking. Responsibilities include preparing plans, specifications, and cost estimates for various public works projects, such as road maintenance, sidewalks, and ADA ramps, utilizing both commonly used software applications and specialized engineering software like Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The assistant will also assist in field investigations and studies, preparing preliminary and final plans, specifications, and cost estimates for construction and maintenance projects, including drainage systems, wastewater systems, and storm drains. In addition, the Civil Engineer Assistant will review proposed private developments for compliance with City standards and various State and Federal requirements, including stormwater regulations and public right-of-way improvements. The role involves processing and coordinating the review of subdivision submittals, ensuring that easements meet city requirements, and performing calculations that require knowledge of algebra and trigonometry. The assistant will support the issuance of encroachment permits and conduct site inspections for work performed in public rights-of-way. Furthermore, the position includes providing information to the public regarding utility locations, property lines, and other relevant data as directed by the Director of Public Works or their designee.
