About the position

DLZ Corporation is seeking a Civil Engineer - Construction Services Project Engineer to join our team in Columbus, Ohio. As an award-winning architecture and engineering firm, we pride ourselves on delivering high-quality services to both public and private entities across the nation. The successful candidate will manage multi-discipline engineering projects from the planning and procurement stages through to start-up and construction. This role is pivotal in ensuring that projects are executed efficiently, on time, and within budget while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. In this position, you will assist in business development efforts and review proposed contracts to identify significant parameters, time schedules, and milestones. You will be responsible for managing inspection and testing personnel on multiple projects, coordinating field activities, and maintaining all field equipment. As the principal contact with clients, you will resolve problems and coordinate the final turnover of projects, ensuring that all contractual commitments are met and that work is performed according to client instructions. You will also direct the planning and development of project scope, procedures, and budgets, while maintaining effective relationships with all divisions and departments involved in the project. Your role will include reviewing and approving major change orders, controlling project forecasts, schedules, cost estimates, and reports, and conducting periodic client meetings to discuss progress and any necessary engineering changes. Additionally, you will prepare progress and special reports for staff and clients, maintain project files, and ensure the completion of final project paperwork and reports. Health and safety concerns will also be a priority, as you will review and address these on assigned projects. Finally, you will work closely with the accounting department to ensure accurate billings and receipts, and actively participate in civic and professional activities.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multi-discipline engineering projects from planning and procurement through start-up and construction.
  • Assist business development efforts.
  • Review proposed contracts to determine significant parameters, time schedules, and milestones.
  • Manage inspection and testing personnel on multiple projects including QA/QC testing.
  • Coordinate and schedule activities in the field, including the maintenance of all field equipment.
  • Resolve problems and coordinate the final turnover of the project to the client.
  • Direct the planning and development of the project scope, procedures, and budget.
  • Coordinate all client contact and maintain working relationships throughout the project.
  • Ensure contractual commitments are met and work is performed according to client instructions.
  • Review and approve all major change orders and periodically review change order controls.
  • Control and review all project forecasts, schedules, cost estimates, and reports.
  • Monitor fees and budgets, reporting problems to appropriate managers.
  • Conduct periodic client meetings to review progress and discuss changes.
  • Prepare or direct the preparation of progress and special reports to staff and clients.
  • Maintain project files and obtain client's acceptance of work.
  • Review and address health & safety concerns on assigned projects.
  • Work with the accounting department to keep billings and receipts current and accurate.
  • Be actively involved in civic and professional activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or other relevant degree.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Construction Manager (CCM) or Project Management Professional (PMP) preferred.
  • Experience managing and inspecting City of Columbus and/or ODOT projects is a plus.
  • Experience managing horizontal and/or vertical construction projects, developing CM/CI budgets, creating pay estimates, change orders, etc.
  • Construction materials testing and inspection experience is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, e-Builder, LMIS.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to use personal vehicle for job-related work as needed.
  • Ability to visit and safely traverse construction and project sites while complying with all applicable safety codes and requirements.
