About the position

The Civil Engineer, Design (PSO) B position at TVA is an opportunity for an experienced professional to engage in the design and engineering of high voltage transmission lines. The role is situated within the Chief Operating Officer's organization, specifically in the Line Systems Engineer and Design department, located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of experience working at a large electric utility or a contract engineering firm, focusing on the design of high voltage transmission lines (115-kV and above). A strong understanding of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) as it pertains to transmission lines is essential. The candidate should also possess experience in designing various structures, including steel, wood, and concrete, as well as analyzing existing structures for modifications and improvements. In this role, the Civil Engineer will be responsible for planning, scheduling, conducting, coordinating, and directing detailed projects of moderate scope or as part of a major project. The work will require sound judgment and a broad knowledge of standards and precedents in civil, structural, and line engineering, along with an understanding of the electrical engineering aspects of transmission line engineering. The position may involve complex features such as conflicting design requirements and difficult coordination with various stakeholders, including contractors, public utilities, and regulatory agencies. The candidate may also be involved in the publication of engineering papers and articles in professional and trade journals, which is considered desirable. The Civil Engineer will assess and rehabilitate installed lines and structures, develop new designs, and perform analysis of existing facilities to determine necessary modifications based on changes in use and loading. Additionally, the role includes performing cost estimates and economic analyses to support value engineering initiatives.
