About the position

The Civil Engineer (Geotechnical) position within the Technical Services Branch of the Western Federal Lands Highway Division is responsible for conducting geotechnical investigations, analyses, and providing design recommendations for roadway and bridge construction projects. The role emphasizes foundations, retaining wall design, embankment design, slope stability, and subsurface investigations, ensuring the integrity and safety of infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the Geotechnical Section on Division cross-functional teams to provide geotechnical recommendations for roadway, bridge, and trail projects.
  • Plan and oversee geotechnical site investigations and instrumentation programs, develop laboratory testing programs, and complete geotechnical analyses.
  • Provide geotechnical recommendations for shallow and deep foundations, earth retaining structures, reinforced soil slopes, and embankment designs.
  • Write construction specifications for geotechnical project elements and complete geotechnical reports and memoranda.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to resolve geotechnical issues during construction and offer field support and inspection assistance.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Specialized experience in geotechnical aspects of transportation projects, including planning and implementing subsurface field investigations and laboratory testing for soil and rock.
  • Experience in geotechnical design analysis and preparation of geotechnical memos and reports.
  • Knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles related to subsurface soil or geologic conditions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with landslide mitigation and ground improvement techniques.
  • Familiarity with cost considerations and constructability in geotechnical design.
