About the position

The Civil Engineer (Geotechnical) will represent the Geotechnical Section on cross-functional teams, providing geotechnical recommendations for roadway, bridge, and trail projects. The role involves planning and overseeing geotechnical site investigations, developing laboratory testing programs, conducting geotechnical analyses, and writing construction specifications. The ideal candidate will have diverse experience in geotechnical engineering, particularly in field investigation, laboratory testing, and construction support related to highway facilities, roads, and bridges.

Responsibilities

• Represent the Geotechnical Section on Division cross-functional teams.
• Plan and oversee geotechnical site investigations and instrumentation programs.
• Develop laboratory testing programs and complete geotechnical analyses.
• Provide geotechnical recommendations for various design areas including foundations and slope stability.
• Write construction specifications for geotechnical project elements.
• Complete geotechnical reports and memoranda.
• Provide technical advice and assistance during construction.
• Support field inspection during the construction of geotechnical design elements.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 level for GS-11 applicants.
• At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level for GS-12 applicants.
• Experience in planning and implementing subsurface field investigation programs.
• Experience in geotechnical design analysis and preparation of geotechnical memos and reports.

Nice-to-haves

• Professional registration or licensure as an Engineer Intern (EI) or Engineer in Training (EIT).
• Experience with government travel card procedures.
• Familiarity with telework policies and agreements.
