About the position

Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the world's leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, is seeking a self-motivated Civil Engineer to be located in the Iowa Field Office in Huxley, Iowa. The successful applicant will join a highly motivated conservation team of biologists and engineers who are responsible for the planning, design, and construction of wetland restoration and enhancement projects. This position primarily focuses on projects in Iowa, with occasional work in Illinois and Missouri. The role requires a proactive approach to project management and collaboration with various stakeholders, including local, state, and federal personnel, private landowners, and other conservation partners. As a Civil Engineer at Ducks Unlimited, you will perform a full range of project planning, design, contracting, and construction management functions on wetland, riparian, and associated habitat restoration projects. Your responsibilities will include scoping and proposal development, conducting surveys, engineering design, project bidding, field inspection, and occasional construction management. You will be expected to prepare proposals, scope of work, and budgets in close coordination with biological staff, ensuring that all engineering designs and reports meet the necessary standards. Additionally, you will attend project meetings, perform topographic surveys, and conduct field inspections to oversee construction management as needed. The position also involves ensuring that consultants and contractors adhere to project plans, specifications, and schedules. You may assist with occasional fieldwork, which could include strenuous outdoor activities in difficult environmental conditions. The ability to operate an ATV and outboard boat when necessary is also required. This role is ideal for someone who is self-motivated, goal-oriented, and capable of working collaboratively in a team-based environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform project planning, design, contracting, and construction management functions on wetland restoration projects.
  • Prepare proposals, scope of work, and budgets in coordination with biological staff.
  • Interpret and apply engineering, surveying, and construction management principles across various projects.
  • Complete engineering designs and reports as required.
  • Prepare project plans, technical specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Attend project meetings and perform topographic surveys.
  • Conduct field inspections and provide construction management oversight as needed.
  • Ensure consultants and contractors adhere to project plans, specifications, and schedules.
  • Assist with occasional fieldwork, including strenuous outdoor activities.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or an equivalent degree from an EAC/ABET accredited engineering program.
  • Registered engineer in training or professional engineer.
  • Preferred minimum of 2 years of experience in civil engineering design.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with surveying, Civil3D, hydrology, hydraulics, civil design, erosion control, construction inspection, and project management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Civil3D software.
  • Knowledge of hydrology and hydraulics principles.
  • Familiarity with construction inspection processes.
