About the position

The City of Huntsville's Water Pollution Control Department is actively seeking qualified applicants for the position of Civil Engineer I. This role is essential in ensuring that various public works construction and improvement projects are designed, constructed, and inspected in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards, while also adhering to project budgets. As a journey-level professional engineer, the Civil Engineer I will engage in a variety of tasks that include mathematical and engineering determinations, cost estimates, designs, reviews, inspections, and project management for new improvements. The Water Pollution Control Department plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the community's waterways. This department is responsible for the removal of pollutants from wastewater generated in daily life, including residential, educational, and industrial sources. Each year, the department purifies billions of gallons of wastewater, returning clean reclaimed water to local waterways. The Civil Engineer I will be involved in reviewing public works construction plans and ensuring compliance with building and zoning codes, regulations, and ordinances. Responsibilities

  • Ensure public works construction and improvement projects are designed, constructed, and inspected according to applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Conduct mathematical and engineering determinations for various projects.
  • Prepare cost estimates and designs for public works projects.
  • Review public works construction plans for compliance with building and zoning codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Manage projects to ensure they are completed within budget and on schedule.
  • Inspect construction sites to ensure adherence to design specifications and safety standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Some civil engineering experience is required.
  • Knowledge of current civil engineering principles and practices related to roadways, drainage systems, and municipal infrastructure.
  • E.I.T. Certificate required within one year of hire or promotion.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.
