About the position

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Civil Engineer to join its newly established Structural Services Unit within the Construction Section. This role focuses on supporting bridge construction and structural materials, providing a unique opportunity to work on engineering tasks while collaborating with experts in the field. The position offers a blend of office and fieldwork, allowing for hands-on experience in vital public infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Review concrete mix designs for compliance with specifications.
  • Evaluate structural-related construction submittals for compliance and quality.
  • Assist in constructability plan reviews and recommend process improvements.
  • Develop or review construction specifications related to bridge construction and structural materials.
  • Provide field support or training for construction inspection staff, including project site visits and evaluations of in-service structures.
  • Participate in concrete material testing and other lab work as needed.
  • Liaise with concrete industry partners to review concrete mix designs and resolve specification challenges.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts in bridge construction and structural material practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND two (2) years of engineering experience.
  • OR Associates degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND four (4) years of engineering experience INCLUDING licensure as an Engineer Intern.

Nice-to-haves

  • Licensure as an Engineer Intern (EIT) or the ability to obtain it.
  • Experience or strong interest in bridge design, construction, or concrete material science.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for effective reporting and collaboration.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team environment.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and growing in the engineering field.
