About the position

AECOM is seeking a Mid-Level Civil Engineer for the Surface Transportation Department in Murray, Utah. This position plays a crucial role in the design and development of various transportation projects, which may include urban and rural roadways, interstate highways, interchanges, and design-build projects. The ideal candidate will be involved in the geometric design of roadways, creating horizontal and vertical alignments and models, and preparing comprehensive design reports, including design study reports and technical memorandums. In this role, you will coordinate with project stakeholders, including clients, the public, utility companies, and permitting agencies, ensuring that all aspects of the project align with UDOT or local standards. You will be responsible for calculating quantities and estimates for transportation projects, providing specialized technical input to studies and designs, and participating in interdisciplinary reviews of project deliverables. Additionally, you will prepare technical specification sections and contribute to the development of engineering budgets and schedules to meet project requirements. As a Mid-Level Civil Engineer, you will work under the supervision of a senior engineer, performing specific and limited portions of broader assignments. You will gather and correlate basic engineering data using established procedures, work on detailed engineering assignments involving calculations, and identify discrepancies in results. Your role will also involve proposing solutions to new problems encountered, providing guidance to entry-level engineers, and utilizing computer software as a tool for solving engineering problems. You will collaborate with design teams consisting of multidisciplinary design engineers, technicians, and planners, ensuring that all work is performed in accordance with agreed-upon budgets and schedules. Effective communication, both written and oral, is essential as you will be interacting with peers and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Geometric design of roadways creating horizontal and vertical alignments and models.
  • Preparation of design reports including design study reports and technical memorandums.
  • Coordination with project stakeholders including clients, the public, utility companies, and permitting agencies.
  • Plan preparation for roadway plans in accordance with UDOT or Local standards.
  • Calculate quantities and estimates for UDOT and local transportation projects.
  • Provides specialized technical input to studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables.
  • Prepares technical specification sections.
  • Provides input to the development of engineering budget and schedule to meet requirements.
  • Performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer under the supervision of a senior engineer.
  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures under the supervision of a senior engineer.
  • Works on detailed and routine engineering assignments involving calculations and identifies discrepancies in results.
  • Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered.
  • Provides guidance to entry level engineers.
  • Uses analytic and design skills.
  • Uses computer software as a tool for solving engineering problems.
  • Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule under supervision to create and deliver work products to clients.
  • Working within the Highway group on the planning and design of civil engineering projects including local roadways, highways, interstates, multi-modal, utility, and drainage improvements.
  • Collaborating with design teams consisting of multidiscipline design engineers, technicians, and planners.

Requirements

  • BA/BS + 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (preferred).
  • 4+ years of previous roadway design experience on transportation projects including Schematic Development and/or Preparation of Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E) (preferred).
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License or the ability to obtain a PE license within the first year of employment (preferred).
  • Experience designing highway/roadway systems (preferred).
  • Experience on multidisciplinary project with subconsultants (preferred).
  • Experience with design software including Bentley Open Roads / ORD (preferred).
  • Current work and experience with Schematic Development, Roadway Design (preferred).
  • Good communication skills and ability to work as a team (preferred).
