About the position

The Civil Engineer II position involves performing routine professional engineering work related to the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of civil engineering projects. The role includes assisting in the preparation of designs, plans, specifications, estimates, and reports, as well as conducting field engineering inspections and testing construction materials. This position is categorized as a shortage class of work, which may provide a shortage differential in addition to the base salary. There are two immediate vacancies: one temporary full-time position in Kailua-Kona with the Department of Environmental Management - Wastewater Division, and one permanent full-time position in Hilo with the Department of Public Works - Engineering Division. The selected candidate may be appointed at any rate within the advertised salary range based on qualifications, and there is potential for career advancement to Civil Engineer III, contingent upon meeting performance requirements and qualifications. The Civil Engineer II will assist in making preliminary and final surveys, reducing and plotting survey notes, computing vertical and horizontal curves, and preparing mass diagrams. The role also involves assisting in the design of various structures such as reservoirs, bridges, culverts, and highways, as well as preparing specifications and cost estimates. The engineer will be responsible for conducting land use studies, compiling data, and preparing maps, while also serving as a chief-of-party or design squad leader, supervising sub-professional personnel. The position requires operating a vehicle for work-related duties and performing other related tasks as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine professional engineering work in civil engineering projects.
  • Assist in preparing designs, plans, specifications, estimates, and reports.
  • Conduct field engineering inspections and tests on construction materials.
  • Assist in making preliminary and final surveys and plotting survey notes.
  • Compute vertical and horizontal curves and earthwork quantities.
  • Prepare mass diagrams and assist in the design of various structures.
  • Develop details, check computations, and prepare final working drawings.
  • Assist in the preparation of specifications and cost estimates.
  • Conduct land use studies and compile data for maps.
  • Serve as chief-of-party or design squad leader, supervising sub-professional personnel.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in engineering.
  • One year of professional civil engineering work experience.
  • Possession of a valid State of Hawai`i Driver License (Class 3) or a comparable driver license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with engineering drafting and design work.
  • Knowledge of engineering mathematics and mechanics of materials.
  • Familiarity with topographic surveying principles.
